Heritage Time Capsule Project

The ISSMGE Heritage Time Capsule (HTC) project is an initiative by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering to preserve and celebrate the history, achievements, and future aspirations of the geotechnical engineering community.

Aimed at engaging both current and future generations, HTC comprises a digital archive and a planned physical time capsule to be displayed at the 2026 ICSMGE conference in Vienna.

Key Features:

  • HTC Website: A dedicated platform within issmge.org, featuring contributions from Member Societies, Technical Committees, and key figures. It offers a searchable archive, with interactive elements to explore the rich history and evolving goals of the ISSMGE.
  • Project Phases: The HTC unfolds in four stages:
    1. Contributions: Collecting valuable content, including videos, articles, and historical documents.
    2. Discovery: Promoting engagement with past contributions through discoverer reports.
    3. Time Capsule: The physical time capsule to be sealed in 2026, preserving select materials.
    4. 100 Years On: Reflecting on future geotechnical needs and developments.

The HTC fosters pride in collective achievements, honors insights from past leaders, and empowers individual members to explore and contribute to ISSMGE’s legacy. This enduring project aims to serve as a valuable resource and inspiration for geotechnical professionals for generations to come.
